TRACTION VS TORQUE: THE BATTLE FOR GRIP
The torque created by the twisting motion of a golf swing is quite literally strong enough to sweep a golfer off his feet. Stopping that from actually happening are a number of thorny protrusions on the sole of each shoe called ‘studs’. These provide multiple points of contact between the shoe and the ground, resisting the swing’s torque by increasing traction.

Why is traction so important? Because if the traction provided by the shoe is less than the torque applied by the swing you’ll lose grip and balance, and that means a loss of control and power. To maintain the same level of grip with worn studs you’ll need to slow your swing down to re-address the ‘Traction Vs Torque’ balance, sacrificing distance in the process. How appealing does that sound?

    The power of a traction

Studs are cheap and easily replaceable (so you have NO excuse for letting them wear down), but it’s the responsibility of the shoe itself to make sure those studs can do their job; by keeping them in contact with the ground or the longest time possible. That’s why a golf shoe has to offer both stability (the ability to hold the foot in place during the swing) and flexibility (complimenting the natural movements of the foot while walking) if it’s to be effective.

Feature Article: KEEP IN TOUCH: FIND THE RIGHT GLOVE
How many points of contact do you have with the golf club? Only two; your hands, and they dictate the level of feel and the amount of feedback that you’ll get from each shot, as well as your ability to square (or open or close, depending on your necessity) the club face through impact.

Now consider your thought process when choosing a glove. Is there one? Or are decisions made based on material, price or brand? Whichever the answer, the sheer number of gloves on the market today can make things confusing; but a glove is certainly worth more consideration so we’re going to clarify things by walking through some of the most important factors.

Make no mistake, a high quality, high performance glove does cost a little extra; but if you get your grip right and make sure you have the correct size (far too many golfers wear gloves that are too big) it’ll be worth it. Not only will you find that it’s more comfortable, it will be more durable and provide better traction too – and that means performance; your shot dispersion will tighten and your handicap will drop. Simple as that.

From January 2010, all Wedges will be manufactured according to a new set of rules where groove volume will be halved. This means that the space in the groove to channel away debris will be significantly smaller, making it harder to get out of the rough.

    wedge

The new rule states that amateurs will be allowed to play with pre-2010 Wedges until 2024, but I’ve heard rumours that this will be extended (professional golfers will have to replace their Wedges from 2010). Most amateurs realise though that if they have had their current “aggressive groove” Wedges for a few years already, they’ll need to upgrade (or in this case downgrade) long before 2024.

Does this mean that amateurs should upgrade their Wedges this year?

The rough that we play in is rarely the six or more inches that Professionals contend with on courses such as Bethpage Black. However, even in light rough (and ours is often wet as well) it makes sense that a larger groove area will pop the ball out with more ease – much more of that grit, water, grass and mud is channelled away from the contact that the Wedge is making with the ball.

On the market today, in 2009, are several different groove technologies. What’s important is that each stretches groove area to the maximum. As well as this though, each promises the best bite and stopping power.
